Michael T. Hartney

Assistant Professor

Department of Politics

Lake Forest College

Welcome! I am an Assistant Professor of American Politics and Public Policy at Lake Forest College. My current research focuses on education politics and policy, the interplay between political and educational inequality, and the workings of American political institutions more generally. Recent publications have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as American Journal of Political Science, Perspectives on Politics, and American Politics Research.

Much of this work has been supported by grants from the National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation, the American Federation of Teachers, and the National Council on Teacher Quality and received subsequent media coverage from The Boston Globe, Newsweek, Education Week, and U.S. News and World Report. Prior to my current career in academia, I worked in Washington D.C. as a policy analyst for the National Governors Association (NGA) Center for Best Practices.
